2012 Plant an Azalea Week

Cape Fear Garden Club announces
4th Annual “Plant an Azalea Week” April 15-21, 2012
Residents urged to reestablish area as “City of a Million Azaleas”

The Cape Fear Garden Club along with Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo have proclaimed the week of April 15-21, 2012 as “Plant an Azalea Week”. The effort is being headed up by co-chairmen Gayle Ward and Sydney Penny who are encouraging the residents of New Hanover County to plant azaleas at their residences, businesses and in public areas. The week will kickoff with a planting ceremony of six Encore Azaleas given by Buddy Lee, the creator of the Encore Azalea, at Sunset Park Elementary School at 10:00 on Monday April 16, 2012. There will be a short program presented by the kindergarten students at the school. Several of the Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Bells will be in attendance. The public is also invited to attend.

Beginning in the late 1940’s, planting azaleas in Wilmington was promoted resulting in the beautiful display of color still enjoyed today. Famed photographer/conservationist and Wilmington native Hugh Morton described Wilmington as ‘the city of over a million azaleas’”. Unfortunately, there has been a marked decline in the planting of old southern favorites, especially the azalea, by homeowners and businesses. To encourage residents to plant azaleas, several garden centers and nurseries have discounted their stock of azaleas during “Plant an Azalea Week”. Those participating include: Lou’s Flower World, Lloyds’ of Landscape, Tinga Nursery, and Zone 8 all offering a 10 % discount. The Transplanted Garden is offering a 20% discount during the week.

Through the years, the collaborative efforts of Cape Fear Garden Club with the City of Wilmington and area non-profit agencies have focused on the beautification of our public areas. Please join Cape Fear Garden Club and our local government in the effort to reestablish the beautiful azaleas that have come to symbolize our area. For information on planting azaleas visit www.capefeargardenclub.org or contact the New Hanover County Arboretum. Help return New Hanover County and Wilmington to the “City of a Million Azaleas” during “Plant an Azalea Week” April 15 through April 21.
